7 Simple Ways to Judge Forged and Cast Wheels

The production and processing methods are different. Cast rims are made by casting molten aluminum water in a sand mold, and then machining (deburring, trimming, polishing) after cooling and molding.

Forging is to use a steel mold, place a heated and softened aluminum block in it, shape it by stamping, and then machine it after cooling. Casting is easy to mass-produce, and forging is more expensive due to the complicated process. However , during the production process of forged wheels, due to the continuous stamping of aluminum blocks, the molecular structure will become very tight after molding, so it can withstand high pressure. High pressure, so for the same size and the same strength, forged wheels are also lighter than cast wheels.
 
Further, because the forged wheel hub has a compact structure and can withstand high stress, it can design some more lively thin spokes in the shape design, and the degree of freedom of design is also higher. However, the price of the forged wheel hub is also higher. Cast wheels are much higher, so they are basically used on high-end cars that focus on handling.
 
1. The word FORGED (forging) is generally printed on the forged wheel hub.
 
2. Style type Two-piece and three-piece forged hubs are usually combined by rivets or welding (argon welding). Generally, the colors of the rim and the spokes are obviously different. It can be easily seen that the cast hub is a one-time molding and No color difference. (This method does not necessarily apply to all, because forged wheels also have one-piece)
 
3. The details on the back of the hub The forged hub is the same inside and out, the front and back are bright and smooth with good metallic luster, while the front of the cast hub may be bright, but the back is dark, with obvious demoulding marks or burrs (however, it does not rule out counterfeiting now. For those with poor workmanship, sand holes or small holes can be seen from the back (but it cannot be seen by painting or processing on the back). Forged wheels are generally flat on the back and forged with die stamping.
 
4. Lettering information Information about the hub (PCD, center hole, ET, etc.), the forged hub is generally located on the inner wall of the rim (the most common) or the mounting surface, and the cast hub is generally located on the back of the spoke (most common), the back of the rim or the mounting surface. Generally speaking, hub information is rarely present in the inner wall of the rim of a cast hub.

7. If conditions permit, metal hardness can be measured with a metal hardness tester. The hardness of forged wheels is generally above 100, and the hardness of cast wheels is generally around 80. Use a Leeb metal hardness tester.
